Build your kit bit by bit: a four-week plan

When newspapers priced the government's full list on Amazon UK, it came to about £309. That's a lot in one go, and the government's own advice is to build your kit gradually.

A four-week plan

  1. Week 1: water and food. Bottled water (3 litres per person per day) and 3 days of food that needs no cooking.
  2. Week 2: light and news. A torch, spare batteries, and a battery or wind-up radio.
  3. Week 3: power and first aid. A power bank, kept charged, and a basic first aid kit.
  4. Week 4: warmth, hygiene and paperwork. Blankets, wipes and sanitiser, some cash, copies of documents, and a written list of numbers and medicines.
